A wartime public housing development in Multnomah County, Oregon, Vanport, was located between modern day Portland and the Columbia River. A portmanteau of “Vancouver” and “Portland,” it is currently the site of Delta Park and the Portland International Raceway. At its peak, Vanport housed approximately 40,000 people during World War II – about 40% of them African-American. Home to workers at the wartime Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and Vancouver, Washington, In 1948, the Vanport housing development was devastated by flood, leaving its approximately 18,500 residents without their homes and belongings.
